From Japan and Australia, Sumo Dada, is pursuing an agenda of mind-bending cross-cultural influences, embracing an eclectic, progressive and carefree sound.

In the early 2010's, Akimbo and LaChouf met at a busy Tokyo Narita airport to pursue a planned series of gigs of their respective solo acts. They had met online months earlier via a mutual Australian friend, who introduced their music to each other, and almost instantaneously a tour of Japan was arranged.

As they criss-crossed the Land of the Rising Sun, they decided to combine forces and Sumo Dada was created. The next few years were spent sharing thoughts and ideas via the internet to nut out what their new sound and musical direction would be. One particularly cold winter, Akimbo came to Australia, guitar in hand, and together with LaChouf, a concrete direction started to take place. They were rowing around the dam of LaChouf's family property when they agreed upon at least one musical philosophy: ‘Sumo Dada would be as random and carefree as humanly possible. No agonising over complex harmonies or melodies. No struggling with catchy riffs and pop-friendly structures.’ This was to be a free and easy process of music-making without the fuss!

Throughout the next few years, as general life's obsticles slowed the creative process somewhat, Sumo Dada would traverse the oceans between Japan and Australia, finalising their debut album. Their first performance was as part of an underground noise festival in Oita, Japan. An experience which only solidified their line-up and sound. LaChouf was switching between electric violin, electric Taisho Koto and vocals, whilst Akimbo focused on the guitar and programmed tracks, occasionally adding to the vocals when needed.

At last, in the final months of 2023, Sumo Dada performed their debut album in Fukuoka Japan. With the album now complete, the task of sharing with the world begins.
